Why metal — really
Metal roofing has gone from being a niche choice (mostly barns and ranches) to the highest-growth segment of the residential roofing industry. Reasons that actually matter:
- Lifespan. A properly installed standing-seam roof has a 50-year service life. Stone-coated steel is similar. Compared to a 22-year asphalt shingle, you're potentially eliminating two replacement cycles in your lifetime.
- Energy. Reflective Kynar-coated panels can reduce attic temperatures by 25–35°F in peak summer — measurable AC savings in Boerne and San Antonio.
- Hail resistance. Most metal systems carry Class 4 impact ratings, the highest tier. That qualifies for the same insurance discounts as impact shingles, often 10–30% off your roof premium for life.
- Wind. Standing-seam systems are typically rated for 140+ mph wind, dramatically more than asphalt.
- Aesthetics. Modern matte finishes (slate gray, dark bronze, mountain green, charcoal) look nothing like the silver barn-style metal of twenty years ago.
The metal systems we install
Standing-seam metal
The premium choice. Continuous panels run from ridge to eave with concealed fasteners locked into raised seams. No exposed screws, no fastener failure points, no holes through the panel. We install 20–24 gauge Galvalume with Kynar 500 PVDF finishes — the longest-lasting paint system available.
R-Panel / Pro-Panel (exposed fastener)
The traditional Texas Hill Country metal roof. Strong, affordable, fast to install. Uses exposed fasteners with EPDM gaskets — these need replacement every 15–20 years, but the panel itself lasts 40+. The right choice for outbuildings, barns, ranch houses, and budget-conscious metal installs.
Stone-coated steel (DECRA, Boral)
Steel panels coated with stone granules to mimic the look of slate, shake, or tile. Combines the durability of metal with the aesthetic of premium asphalt or tile. Excellent option for HOA-restricted neighborhoods that don't allow standing-seam.
What metal costs in Boerne & San Antonio
For a 2,500 sq ft home, expect:
- R-Panel / exposed-fastener: $20,000 – $28,000
- Standing-seam, 24ga Kynar: $32,000 – $48,000
- Stone-coated steel: $36,000 – $52,000
Metal is roughly 1.8–2.8× shingle cost. Looked at across a 50-year ownership horizon (versus two shingle replacements), the math frequently favors metal — especially with insurance discounts factored in.
"The right metal roof, properly installed in the Hill Country, will outlast its homeowner."
