If you've lived in San Antonio or Boerne for more than a few years, you know hail season. The peak runs roughly March through June, with a secondary spike in fall. Storms move fast off the Hill Country, drop hail in tight corridors, and disappear before most homeowners have processed what happened.
Here's how to be ready.
Pre-season: do this in February
- Schedule a free roof inspection. A reputable local roofer will tell you whether your roof is in shape to handle a storm. We do these for free in Boerne, San Antonio, and surrounding areas.
- Photograph your roof from all four sides. Take time-stamped photos. If a storm hits and you file a claim, having "before" photos eliminates 80% of carrier disputes.
- Walk the attic. Look for any pre-existing leaks or stains. Document them. You don't want a carrier later claiming a hail leak was actually pre-existing.
- Trim overhanging branches. A 6" branch dropped by wind can wreck a perfect roof.
- Clear gutters. Backed-up gutters during a storm push water under shingles.
- Confirm your wind/hail deductible. Most Texas policies are 1–2% of dwelling. Know yours before a claim, not during.
The day of a storm
If a storm is bearing down:
- Bring outdoor furniture in or under cover
- Park vehicles in the garage or under cover if possible
- Stay inside
After the storm passes:
- Walk around the house and look for shingle pieces in the yard
- Check AC condenser fins for hail dents (irrefutable evidence)
- Look at gutters and downspouts for fresh dings
- Check window screens and outdoor furniture for marks
- Photograph everything before cleanup
The first 48 hours after a storm
The single biggest mistake homeowners make is signing with the first roofer who knocks on their door. Storm-chasers descend on Texas neighborhoods within hours. Many are out-of-state operators who'll take your insurance proceeds and disappear.
What to do instead:
- Call a local, established roofer (BBB-accredited, in business 5+ years, local address)
- Have them inspect — most are free and fast post-storm
- Get the inspection report in writing with photos
- Then call your insurance carrier
If a roofer offers to "waive your deductible"…
Run. This is illegal in Texas (it's insurance fraud) and a clear signal you're working with someone who'll cut every other corner too.
