Solar adoption keeps climbing across the Hill Country and the San Antonio metro, and we're increasingly asked the same question: what does solar mean for my roof?
The short version — sequence matters enormously, and getting it wrong is costly.
The core issue: roof age vs panel lifespan
Solar panels are typically warrantied 25 years and often last longer. An asphalt shingle roof in Texas realistically delivers 15–22 years.
If you install panels on a roof that's already 12 years old, you will almost certainly need to remove and reinstall the entire array partway through the panels' life. That removal and reinstall commonly runs several thousand dollars, and it's entirely avoidable.
The rule of thumb
If your roof has less than 10 years of remaining life, replace it before installing solar. If it has more than 15, you're generally fine to proceed.
The 10–15 year band is a judgment call that depends on the roof's actual condition, not just its age. That's what an inspection is for — and it's worth getting an independent opinion rather than relying solely on the solar installer's assessment, since they're not the ones warrantying your roof.
How panels attach, and why it matters
Most residential solar mounts use lag bolts driven through the roof decking into the rafters, with flashing at each penetration.
A typical array creates dozens of new roof penetrations. Every one of them is a potential leak point if it's not flashed properly. Quality installers use purpose-built flashed mounts. Cheaper installs rely more heavily on sealant, which has a finite lifespan under Texas UV.
When we get called to a leak on a home with solar, the penetration points are the first place we look.
What happens to your roof warranty
This catches people off guard. Drilling into a roof can affect the manufacturer's material warranty and will often void a workmanship warranty from the roofing contractor, unless the solar work is coordinated.
Before you install, ask your roofer directly how solar affects your coverage. Some manufacturers have approved mounting systems and procedures that preserve coverage. Getting this in writing beforehand is worth the phone call.
The efficient sequence
If your roof is nearing end of life and you want solar, doing both together is meaningfully cheaper than doing them years apart:
- You pay for one mobilization instead of two.
- No future removal-and-reinstall cost.
- Roof and mounting can be coordinated so flashing is integrated correctly.
- Warranty questions get resolved once, up front.
Roofing considerations specific to solar
A few things worth discussing before the array goes on:
- Panel shading effects. Panels shade the roof beneath them, which actually slows shingle aging in that area. The trade-off is that the shaded sections then age differently from exposed sections.
- Debris accumulation. Leaves and Hill Country debris collect under arrays where they're hard to clear. Valleys near arrays need more attention.
- Access for repairs. A leak under an array is a much bigger job than a leak in open field. Some homeowners deliberately leave a service corridor.
- Metal roofing pairs well. Standing-seam metal allows clamp-on mounting with no penetrations at all, and metal's 40–50 year lifespan aligns much better with panel lifespan.
Metal roofs and solar
If you're planning solar and considering a roof replacement anyway, standing-seam metal deserves serious thought. Clamp-on mounts attach to the seams without penetrating the roof surface, eliminating the leak risk that comes with lag-bolt mounting entirely.
