Gutters are the least glamorous part of a roof system and one of the most consequential. In the Hill Country, where rain tends to arrive in short intense bursts rather than steady drizzle, undersized or failing gutters cause problems well beyond a wet walkway.
The Hill Country rainfall problem
Our rain doesn't come gently. A significant share of annual rainfall arrives in a handful of high-intensity events, and the terrain means runoff moves fast.
A gutter system sized for average rainfall will be overwhelmed during exactly the events that matter. When gutters overflow, water sheets down the fascia and behind the gutter, which is where the damage starts.
What overflowing gutters actually damage
- Fascia and soffit rot. Water running behind a gutter soaks the fascia board continuously during a storm. Repeated over seasons, it rots — and fascia replacement is far more expensive than gutter work.
- Roof edge and decking. Water backing up under the drip edge gets into the decking edge, causing soft spots that show up during your next roof replacement as an unexpected line item.
- Foundation movement. This is the expensive one. Concentrated water at the foundation perimeter causes differential soil movement, and Hill Country clay soils are already prone to it. Foundation repair costs vastly more than gutters.
- Siding, windows, and landscaping erosion from splash-back and concentrated runoff.
Sizing: 5-inch vs 6-inch
Standard residential gutter is 5-inch K-style. Six-inch is meaningfully larger in capacity — not 20% more as the dimension suggests, but closer to 40% more water volume, plus larger downspouts that clog less.
We recommend 6-inch on Hill Country homes with large roof areas, steep pitches, or long roof runs feeding a single gutter line. The incremental cost is modest; the capacity difference during a hard rain is substantial.
Downspout placement is half the system
People focus on the gutter and ignore the downspouts. A properly sized gutter with too few downspouts still overflows, because water can't exit fast enough.
General guidance: a downspout for roughly every 30–40 feet of gutter run, and more on steep or large-area roofs. Equally important is where the water goes after it exits — a downspout dumping directly at the foundation has just moved the problem.
Extensions, splash blocks, or buried drain lines carrying water 4–6 feet away from the foundation are worth doing. This is cheap insurance against a very expensive problem.
Gutter guards: worth it or not?
Depends heavily on your trees. Under Hill Country live oaks, which shed constantly, guards can save real maintenance effort. On a home with no overhanging trees, they're often unnecessary.
Quality matters a lot here. Cheap mesh guards clog with fine debris and oak catkins, and then you have a clogged gutter that's also harder to clean. Better designs — micro-mesh or reverse-curve — cost more and perform better.
Honest take: guards reduce cleaning frequency. They don't eliminate maintenance, and any company promising you'll never clean your gutters again is overselling.
Signs your gutters need attention
- Water spilling over the front edge during rain (undersized or clogged)
- Staining or streaking on the fascia behind the gutter
- Gutters pulling away from the fascia or visibly sagging
- Erosion trenches or splashed mulch under the gutter line
- Standing water in the gutter after rain stops (pitch problem)
- Peeling paint or damp spots on soffits
Do gutters during a roof replacement
If your gutters are aging and your roof is due, doing both together makes sense. The drip edge, gutter apron, and gutter all have to work as a system, and coordinating them means water actually goes where it should.
It's also cheaper than two separate mobilizations, and it avoids the situation where new gutters get damaged during a later tear-off.
